Online banking has become very popular and many people are using their online capabilities to do all of their banking. Those who have used online banking are now comfortable with it have found it to be an easy and fast way to get things done without having to visit the bank. While online banking can get things done fast, many people still wonder if it is safe.

The answer to that question is yes. Yes, as long as you take a few precautions yourself.

An interesting aspect to online banking came to light recently. It seems that those who bank online have a tendency to watch over their accounts better than those who do not use online banking. The reason for this is because those who use online banking have immediate access to their account information, seven days a week. Those who do not use online banking have to rely on their monthly statement to arrive before they can check their accounts in detail.

Having immediate access to their accounts allowed those online users to see if trouble was at hand, especially in the areas of fraud and identity theft. According to MSN Money columnist Liz Pulliam Weston, “Victims of cyber crime who tracked their accounts online paid out an average of $551 per incident, whereas those who relied on paper statements paid an average $4,543 per incident.”

Even with added security and ease of use, online banking should be conducted with common sense safety in mind. Here are some good tips for making sure your online experience does not go astray.

One of the most important protection measures is a good firewall. A computer firewall is simply a software program that is designed to allow authorized people into your computer data and to keep unauthorized people out of your computer data. The good news is most new computers come with firewalls already installed into the systems. If you use DSL or cable modem you will usually have an extra layer of protection. These types of internet access modems normally have their own firewalls installed in them. Those people with old computers or who use dial up modems may have to buy a separate firewall and have it installed.

The second most important issue with safe online banking or any type of online financial transaction for that matter is the use of anti-virus and anti-spy software. Most of the bigger operating systems companies, such as MicroSoft, will issue periodic updates and users should get these when they become available. Many of these updates contain fixes to previous bugs in the operating system and they can help prevent hackers from getting to your data. You can buy anti-virus and spyware software or you can find free program online. Either way, it is a good idea to keep your computer clean.

Online banking should never be conducted in a public, wireless environment. Many people like to do their banking chores while sipping on coffee at their favorite wireless cafe, but do resist doing that. There is software available that can pick up your information and save it to another’s computer. As well, you should not do your online banking through public computers such as those at the library or internet cafes. Again, you put your information at risk by doing so.

An easy way to make sure that you are on a secure page is to look for the small icon of the lock. This is usually shown in the lower right corner of the browser window. In the address bar, look for the https prefix. That “s” at the end means that you are on a secure page. If you do not see it, you are not working on a secure page and may have been relocated to a scam address.

Use the security features you have available and your online banking will be safer and more enjoyable.

Companies that offer check advances and payday loans are just like any other businesses, their regulations and rules may always vary to some extent. A lot of companies are more lenient than others and some have cheaper fees than others. It is just good common sense to look into at least several individual companies prior to deciding which one you want to use. You need to acquire the best fees you can and select a firm that will give you the most flexible conditions for the money.

The first thing you will need to consider before picking a payday loan business is what information they want and what requirements that you need to fulfill. The reason these firms do not do a credit history on you is because they already know that the majority of their clients will normally not have credit that is that great or they would be going to other loan organizations such as credit cards or banks.

The most of the payday loan businesses must have proof of a steady job or other credible income. They will also require that you have an existing checking account that is kept up well and will want proof of at least your most recent checking account statement or maybe the past two or three. These are normally the only necessities that you need to fulfill. If you have had payday loans before with another company and you have a bad reputation with them, then that can give you a problem when conducting transactions with a new firm.

When you do decide on a loan of this sort, try not to ever over extend yourself. Once you acquire a bad reputation in the payday loan business, it will be almost impossible for you to get a firm that will do business with you. So pay off your loans when they need to be paid and if you can not, be sure to set it up again by paying the renewal fee and getting yourself some more time.

Payday loans will be a friend to you or they may become a liability if you do not use them wisely. Never borrow money under these circumstances unless you have to or unless you know you are able to pay back the loan without creating yourself future problems. Even the loan businesses themselves will tell you to not get money from them unless you are going to be able to pay it back. You must use these loan opportunities to help get yourself out of an unexpected hole, not dig yourself a deeper one.Dror Klar is a writer in the field of finances and is currently assisting those in need of cash advances and payday loans, particularly in the state of Kansas.

What Are Finance Charges?

April 15, 2008 by admin

Regardless of the type of credit card that you are using, chances are excellent that it carries with it some form of finance charge. Unfortunately, many credit card companies do not spend a lot of time explaining, in clear language, just how these finances charges affect your monthly bill. Most accountants can probably figure it out, but average consumers often have a harder time with it. So, what exactly are finance charges?

A finance charge as it applies to a credit card is the amount of money that the card issuer is going to charge you when you use the card to make purchases. There are other monetary values on a statement as well such as the purchase amounts of things you charged during the billing period. These other values are used when the company is calculating your finance charge for the monthly bill.

One of the best tips for using credit cards is to either reduce or even eliminate the finance charges. You can eliminate finance charges altogether by simply paying your balance off each month within the grace period allowed by the company. If you do not carry over a balance, you will not be charged interest. It is only when you do not pay off the full amount and some (or all) of your purchases are carried over that you are charged the interest on the amount carried over.

A good way to reduce the amount you have to pay on finance charges is to reduce the amount that you charge each month. This is only common sense, but many consumers can save a lot of money each month by simply paying cash for many items, especially if they are in the habit of carrying over a balance.

Finance charges are calculated by using the amount of your outstanding balance and the APR that applies to the card. The APR is the Annual Percentage Rate. Consumers should understand that the ARP can vary from one company to the next, and it can even vary within the same company.

There are several ways that credit card companies can calculate the finance charges that they apply to consumer credit. In addition to using the cards with the lowest APR’s you should also use the card that best suits your needs in terms of finance charge method.

Some companies will use one billing cycle for figuring out finance charges, others will use two. Some companies may use the previous balance as the basis for finance charges while others may use the average daily balance. Still, some companies will either include or exclude new purchases on the current balance. All of this makes a difference and consumers should investigate the method that their credit card uses as this can save money over the long run.

You will normally find that you have a lower finance charge when the company uses what is known as one-cycle billing and uses the average daily balance method which excludes new purchases. Much of this, however, depends on the balance and the time of the month that you make purchases and payments.

The next lowest finance-charge method that some companies use is the adjusted balance, followed by the previous balance method. You can see which method the company is using by reading the bill that you receive. This information is written on the reverse of your statement.

It is also important that you understand that some companies will have a minimum finance charge system. When a credit card company uses this system you will be charged that minimum amount even if your finance charge is less than that amount.Peter Kenny is a writer for The Thrifty Scot, please visit us at Loan and Credit Cards

Credit card debt reduction services are becoming more popular as more people find themselves in financial trouble. Consumers who believe that credit card debt reduction services may be an option for them should first do some homework. Two things are important before signing up with any company. The first is to know exactly what it is you need done with your credit so that you can work with the right kind of company. The second thing to do is to make sure that you are going to be working with a reputable and honest company.

It may sound like common sense for consumers to know what they need before signing up with a company, but there is often more to it than we think. The first issue that consumers usually have to deal with is the many names that are used by companies offering to help with credit debt. In some cases, the area of expertise is apparent, but in other cases the expertise of the company may not be so easily understood.

If taken purely on face value, there are big differences between companies that offer debt consolidation loans and those that offer debt counseling. Then there are those that offer debt repair service. In some cases, there can be a mix in that one company may offer several services. In other cases, a company will work exclusively in one area.

With all these set-ups available, consumers really do need to consider what services would best fit their financial needs and will bring about the best results.

Consumers should understand that not all credit card debt reduction services work alike. Some will be more adept at helping you get lower interest rates on your current debt. Others will work to get some of your debt forgiven so that you do not have to pay on it anymore. Most will be able to help you set up a reasonable budget to help you avoid getting further into trouble.

Some of these companies will work on a performance basis. That means that you do not pay them until they actually bring about some real results. In most cases, these companies will charge you a percentage of what they save you.

The second issue as mentioned above is to make sure you are working with a reliable and honest company. Simply put, there are companies out there who will cheat you or take your money and do nothing in return. Of course, you want to avoid these folks at all costs.

Those companies that require you to send them large advance fees should be investigated carefully before you send them your money. You can often get information on a company by doing a simple Google search using the company name as your search term.

If you decide to work with a company that will take your money and in turn pay some of it to your creditors make sure that they are doing that for you. There have been cases in the past where companies took customer’s money and did not forward the required amount to the creditors.

Use common sense and caution when searching for the companies that can help you.Peter Kenny is a writer for The Thrifty Scot, please visit us at Credit Cards and Compare Mortgages
